Activities for an In-home Family Photography Session in Phoenix, Arizona

So often I hear from parents how stressed they are about having their family photos taken. So stressed that they often avoid booking them or opt for a majorly rushed mini session “because that’s all the kids/husband can tolerate”.

Hearing that simply breaks my heart, because I want your photos to pull your heart and soul back to core memories in your life. They should evoke joy and remind you of the incredible world you’ve created. They shouldn’t be a major stress point.

Imagine this:

A relaxed morning at home with your family, sipping coffee. The kids are playing, eating a snack. The kids are dressed, but no one has to get shoes on. You’re playing your favorite music playlist. Your newly potty-trained child can use the bathroom when he needs to. You open up the blinds and curtains; your photographer arrives on time ready to play. You are ready for an hour of FUN taking photos!

But wait… We have no idea what to do in our home during our family photo session!

That’s where a mixture of collaboration and my 12 years as a Phoenix family photographer come into play.

In our initial phone conversation, we talk about your family dynamics and goals for this session. We talk about the light in your home and when your family is most at ease (ie. when are naps!).

I then send you a questionnaire to better get to know your family and get your brain thinking about activities your family truly enjoys.

During your session, I use the areas of your home that you adore, as well as some ones you may not suspect that have great light.

We combine some “typical” family portraits, along with activity based photographs that can encompass family traditions or rituals or something just super fun.

Activity/ritual ideas:

Reading books, playing games, coffee and donuts, eating cookies on the countertop, bath time with bubbles, dance party, playing on the playset in the back, measuring heights on the height board

Ideas that are outside the box:

Playing with water balloons/sprinklers, swimming, popsicles by the pool, holi celebration/ color powder war, paint each other, streamer poppers, making a family recipe together/baking.

Your home is where the magic happens; why not embrace it and decrease your stress around family portraits happening???
