A Love Letter to the New Mamas- A Newborn Session

A love letter to the new mamas…

This is such an incredible time in your lives- as you learn what works for you as a parent; as you discover the needs of this tiny human you are now responsible for.  It’s exhausting and exhilarating all rolled into one huge bundle of emotion.

Yes, you are filled with joy and love for this new baby and new role in your life.  The moments of soaking in the warmth of your baby sleeping on your chest, listening to your baby’s noises while he/she nurses/eats and sleeps, smelling that amazing baby smell on the top of their head, and so much more.

But there is a lot that people don’t talk about and it leaves moms feeling sad and alone.  So I’m going to put this out here so you know you’re not alone.

There can also be moments of remorse in letting some of your freedom go, frustrations and arguments with your partner because you’re not on the same page, jealousy that you aren’t out to dinner or on vacation with your friends, anxiety that you’re doing something wrong, frustration that you can no longer accomplish the tasks that you used to, sadness that your body isn’t recovering as fast you thought it would.

As you discover your new role as a mom, there are so many outside voices telling you how you “should” feel.  Know that your own voice is the only one that matters

If you suddenly only want to be home with your child and not at work… that’s okay.

If you are struggling being home and desperately miss your job… that’s okay.

If you look in the mirror and don’t recognize that person… that’s okay- you will find her again.

If your relationships are not the same as they once were… that’s okay- old ones evolve and new ones will form.

If you have intense sadness, do not feel like yourself, or have feelings of hurting yourself or others… you’re not alone and there are doctors who can help you.  Ask for it and accept it.  Those hormones are a bitch.

You’re living in a whole new, amazing world.  And there are so many new feelings, schedules, and balance to figure out.

Know that you will get to where you are meant to be.

Give yourself grace.

Find a local mom group to join (Modern Milk is the best if you are in the Phoenix area).

Talk to your doctor if your feelings are overwhelming.

This mom gig is hard, but know you are capable and strong- after all, you’ve made it this far, right?
