When things go awry during your family photo shoot

When I work with a family, not only am I here to show you the beauty in your family, I am also here to bring your vision to life. I want to know what makes your family special; what things do you love to do; what tiny tidbits about your children you want to remember; and do you have any goals you want to achieve in our shoot.

A family photo shoot should give you images that bring you back in time.

This lovely mama reached out to book a maternity session- she had a vision and inspiration that she really wanted to make into her own.

We chatted and collaborated about the best way to make it happen. She envisioned this adorable hotel session with breakfast in bed, coffee, and her toddler eating pancakes- a fun way to remember when it was just the three of them. She booked a room at The Scott in Scottsdale and we were super excited!

We were all set; I arrived ready to go; and guess what?

The best laid plans sometimes go awry…

Her toddler didn’t sleep well the night before and wanted NOTHING to do with the photo session or cooperating with the vision mom had hoped we could execute.

As with parenting and so many times in life, the best thing to do when faced with a challenge is to pivot, shift, adjust as needed, and go with the flow.

I’ll let you in on a little secret- I’m not rattled when things need to adjust or change or your child doesn’t cooperate.

Because here’s the thing- rarely do things go according to plan! In fact, more often than not, something goes wonky. And that’s okay!!

I am not in a hurry to “make it happen”, because I know with time, space, and flexibility, everything will come together. And I believe time is your greatest resource- so I want you to embrace this time as a family and enjoy yourself.

So I followed the toddler’s lead, guided them to snuggle, dance, laugh, and enjoy their little family in this moment.

Because honestly, the “imperfections” almost always end up being the best part.

In the end, we were able to integrate some of mom’s ideas and in following their child’s lead, we were able to have a fantastic session.

If you’re thinking of scheduling a session but worried that things won’t go according to plan, you’re probably right…

…but you don’t need to worry.

Rolling with the punches is part of the job, and finding the beauty in your imperfectly perfect chaos is my secret superpower.
